Presentations tip #2 – Don’t do them!

In business, two common myths seem to be all-pervasive. One is generally acknowledged to be a myth, a convenient fiction which it seems to suit everybody to continue to propagate – rather like children not swearing in front of adults, who themselves don’t swear in front of children. Part of the reason for this is that people believe the second myth to be true.

Fail up

We know we’ll fail a lot; if you don’t fail you’re not doing anything new. We’d much rather fail with a bunch of sketches that we did (relatively) quickly and cheaply, than once we’ve modeled, rigged, shaded, animated, and lit the film. “Fail fast,” that’s the mantra.

Year One

Like many people – and especially many actors! – I resist being pigeonholed as a certain type of person. It reminds me of teachers who wanted to control me by defining me. “Has anyone ever told you, Alex, that you have a butterfly mind” was a comment made to me in my early 20s. It still rankles… “Alex is inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity” is a comment I can remember word for word from a teenage school report (though I didn’t know then that it was quote from Disraeli).

Presentation tips #1 – Speed run

At a training session today for an international charity, and had a good time with five bright, sparky people, all of whom had significant strengths as presenters, and all of whom were willing to work with me to improve. As usual, the main problem was that they imagined they were far less effective than in fact they were, so much of my job was just about giving them positive feedback.
