Founded in 1997, The Spontaneity Shop is an improvisation theatre company based on the work of Keith Johnstone (inventor of Theatresports). Our spontaneous comedy, perfected from years of experience using and teaching the well-founded principles of improvisation, entertains on stage, educates aspiring improvisers through workshops, and trains corporate professionals to be the best employees they can be.
We have devised and developed a number of original improvisation formats, including the instant romantic comedy DreamDate, the improvised sketch show Horse Aquarium and the surreal, provocative Voices in Your Head. We also stage stand-up comedy shows and comedy plays.
Artistic Director Deborah Frances-White is a Chicago Improv Festival Artistic Associate and she and co-founder Tom Salinsky wrote the book The Improv Handbook for Continuum International Publishing. A second edition is underway.
